Habitat-forming species trap microplastics into coastal sediment sinks

Nearshore biogenic habitats are known to trap sediments, and may therefore also accumulate biofouled, non-buoyant microplastics. Using a current-generating field flume (TiDyFLOW), we experimentally assessed the mechanisms of microplastic trapping two size classes, 0.5 mm 2.5 particle size, by three contrasting types habitats: 1) seagrasses, 2) macroalgae, 3) scleractinian corals. Results showed that benthic organisms with complex architecture rough surface – such as hard corals highest number microplastics in their aboveground structure. Sediment was however major sink, accumulating 1 2 orders magnitude more than Microplastic accumulation sediment could be explained near-bed turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), indicating this is governed same hydrodynamic processes leading trapping. Thus, most valuable terms nursery coastal protection services have capacity sediments.
